An Exclusive Interview with Actress Sarah Drew

written by

MONIQUÉ GAUDÉT

Hello Sarah! Where were you born and how were you raised? What kind of childhood did you have?

I was born in Massacusetts and raised in Charlottesville, VA, and then Stony Brook, Long Island. I had a wonderful childhood. My mom was a science teacher, and my dad was a pastor, and I felt very loved.

Describe yourself in a few words.

Passionate, hard-working, enthusiastic, sensitive, emotional, dedicated and focused.

When did you discover acting? What was your big break into the industry?

I discovered my love for acting when I was 5 during my graduation ceremony from kindergarten. I realized that I LOVED being on stage in fornt of people and from that point on, I looked for any and all opportunities to perform. My big break into the industry was with a Production of Romeo & Juliet at the McCarter Theatre where I played the title role.

I was given great reviews and as a result, was able to sign with an agent, and that's how everything started for me.

Describe your Experience working as Dr. April Kepner on Grey's Anatomy.

It was totally a life changing experience. I was able to tell so many stories that I really loved and cared about. I was able to have both of my children in a work environment that was extremely supportive of mamas, and I was able to gain a global audience which has transformed my life and career.

How did you transition into Directing?

I was producing a film called "Indivisible", and just completely fell in love with the creative process behind the camera as well as in front of it. I asked Debbie Allen if I could start the process of learning how to direct at Grey's and she offered me the opportunity to direct the web series, Grey's Anatomy - B Team, the following year which was then nominated for an Emmy.

That was an exhilarating experience. Since then, I've shadowed several times and hope to direct again soon.

Do you consider yourself an Alpha female?

When I think of an Alpha Female, I think of someone who is a leader. She is someone who works hard and treats people with respect. An alpha female has a plan and works hard to achieve that plan. An alpha female is goal oriented and organized. She has a robust to-do list and enjoys checking things off that list. She is creative and a problem solver. I think that according to that description, yes, I would consider myself an alpha female.

What advice would you give aspiring actresses?

First and foremost, surround yourself with truth tellers. Good friends who know you well and can remind you of your worth when this industry tosses you around and causes you to question it. Find ways to express your artistry everyday, even if you aren't getting paid to do it. Remember to play and keep you child artist alive, especially during the dry spells.

What's a fun fact you would like your fans to know about you?

Beautiful views overwhelm me so much that I often cry when I look a a sunrise or sunset or a view of the mountains or the city. My family takes bets on whether certain activities will make me cry.
