Celebrating Love, Fatherhood & The Power of Intention with The Grammy Nominated Artist Jon B

"Honor your position as a king by operating as such" - words spoken by RnB legend, Jon B, as he sat with Alpha Magazine for his Father's Day exclusive in Los Angeles, California while in the midst of his "Bonafide" tour. Impressively, some thirty years into the music industry, his disposition remains cool as ever, and his voice as smooth as velvet. Jon emits the kind of cool that could settle the entire world, if not for one night. Sharp, intuitive and empathetic, intuitive, his words carried around every room in the posh, Parisian-style house in which ALPHA hosted our conversation.

Having made a career out of pulling on heart strings, and sharing memorable artistic collaborations with the likes of Tupac Shakur, Korrupt, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Faith Evens, Nas and many others, sharing the rarified air with the highly-accomplished, grammy nominated singer-songwriter turned out to be just as spiritual as it was inspiring.

The notion of love - never sounding cliche or surface level when mentioned by the wordsmith - is the spiritual compass that guides his creativity. Jon attributes his ability to stay current while maintaining his authentic sound to his being able to actively love the foundational aspects of his compositions while being able to embrace new ideas and technology.

It's why he is as distinctly proud of his "boutique" projects as much as he's proud of his hits. He revels in the perception on the outside that he only has one style of music, when in fact, he has collaborated in genres such as country, rock, calypso and others - "[My] intention is to let the emotions that I'm going for sink in...anything that is of quality will stand the test of time." As he calls it, the "slow burn" of discovery, whether it be in his learning process or the audience's, is what Jon deeply enjoys.

He also admits that what inspires him to create new music is the ever-growing relationship he has forged with his wife of 18 years. The challenge of taking on and drawing from new experiences keeps his creativity fresh and motivated to work at his craft. Making the analogies of planting a flower and preparing a special meal, Jon constantly reminds us, as he has his daughters, that creating a loving environment with intention is the key to staying fresh and growing in a positive direction.
