THE EDITOR IN CHIEF
When it comes to building platforms that matter, Chanel Nicole Scott is no stranger to turning vision into impact. From the pulpit-inspired conversations that birthed her hit talk show CheMinistry to her viral podcast Relationships Matter, Chanel has consistently carved out spaces for raw, real, and necessary dialogue around love, purpose, and authenticity.
Now celebrating a decade of success while stepping into new roles as both a tech founder and the Chief Marketing Officer of In the Black Network, she continues to prove that transparency and purpose aren’t just buzzwords—they’re the foundation of her brand. In this exclusive interview, Chanel opens up about the lessons behind her journey, the moments that have gone viral, and the future she’s shaping for herself and the culture.
Q. Share with us your unique entrepreneurial journey ranging from production, marketing to tech. What was it that ignited the drive in you to launch your hit talk show "CheMinistry," available for streaming on In The Black Network and Fox Soul?
CheMinistry was inspired by something I saw at my church in Nashville, TN. The conversations there were raw and centered around relationships, but from a spiritual perspective. I wanted to take that same level of transparency and honesty and create a secular space where people could respect themselves and be open about the realities of dating and being single. That’s how CheMinistry was born, a platform that encourages authenticity in relationships.
Q. Congratulations on 10 years of success for CheMinistry! What have been the highs and lows of your career thus far and what will the next 5–10 years look like?
Thank you! Honestly, I haven’t experienced many lows, just the natural challenges of building a platform from the ground up.
If anything, my biggest struggle now is figuring out what’s next after doing this for so long. The desire to collaborate and expand is stronger than ever. Over the next 5–10 years, I see CheMinistry and my other projects growing into larger productions with the support of investors who believe in the vision. My goal is to continue producing content that uplifts, entertains, and expands onto much bigger platforms.
Q. Your podcast, "Relationships Matter," that you created with two-time NBA Champion Josh Powell, engages in candid discussions about love, romance, and everything in between. What was the inspiration behind "Relationships Matter"?
Josh and I first worked together years ago on a live stream show called Relationship Status with Michael in the Morning. At the time, I was single and in a toxic place, and Josh was newly divorced. The show eventually fizzled out because we weren’t in the healthiest spaces emotionally. Fast forward to 2023, we had both grown spiritually, mentally, and personally. We decided to come back together with a fresh approach and rebranded it as Relationships Matter. This time, it was video-based rather than radio, and once our content started going viral, we pitched it to James DuBose at In The Black Network. Initially, there wasn’t interest, but after seeing the viral response, he gave us the green light.
Q. Your recent "Relationships Matter" Podcast interview with Charles Oakley went viral. What was your reaction to that and why do you think that particular interview went viral?
Charles Oakley is a big personality, so honestly, I wasn’t surprised. Getting him to talk about relationships wasn’t easy, but once he did, the gems he dropped were powerful. What most people don’t know is that we actually filmed that interview over a year ago, and I never released it. Once Charles and his wife Angela appeared on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, we decided to release the clip, and it shocked even me how impactful it was. His honesty and wisdom resonated deeply, and I think that’s why it connected so strongly with people.
Q. I know you are a woman of many hats. Tell us about your tech startup and your new position as CMO of In the Black Network? What lessons have you learned as a CEO of a tech startup and what lessons have you learned in your new position as CMO?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that nothing is perfect. When people see polished networks and shows, they don’t see the countless moving parts it takes to make that happen. Major conglomerates have massive funding, but when you’re building from the ground up, you need the support of investors and people who believe in the vision. Despite the challenges, being purpose-driven and telling stories that matter keeps me going. As CMO, I’ve learned how important it is to balance the business side with creativity while never losing sight of impact.
Q. What word of advice and experiences can you share from your book "Relationships Matter" that will empower others to cultivate fulfilling and authentic partnerships in their own lives?
The first lesson I share is the importance of knowing your God-given purpose.
When you’re rooted in purpose, you don’t attach your value to another person. That way, if someone doesn’t accept you or something doesn’t work out, you don’t lose yourself. That foundation allows you to cultivate healthy, authentic relationships without compromising your worth.
Q. I know that you also starred in a vibrant talk show, "Crowned," alongside an all-star lineup including Vivica A. Fox, Syleena Johnson, and Lore’l. What was that experience like, and do you have any plans to continue the show or do another similar talk show concept?
“Crowned” was such a rewarding experience. Vivica, Syleena, and Lore’l welcomed me with open arms, and having Vivica and Syleena as sorority sisters made it even more special. Working alongside women who have decades in the industry taught me so much about production and collaboration. I’m now developing another ensemble talk show called Culture & Co., which begins production in October. The exciting part is that I’ll not only be on the cast but also serve as Executive Producer.
Q. As a successful single woman, is dating more challenging today? If so, why or why not? Also, what qualities do you look for in a man? Also, what are the red flags that both men and women should look out for?
Yes, dating is definitely more challenging today. My mindset has shifted so much that what I was attracted to three or five years ago no longer appeals to me. I date with intention now. If something doesn’t align with my vision, I’m clear about it and move on. For me, it’s about connecting with like-minded people who share similar values. As for red flags, listen closely to a person’s conversations, they’ll reveal who they are. Looks can be deceiving, but integrity, maturity, how someone handles conflict, and whether they are God-fearing are what truly matter. Both men and women should pay attention to character and emotional maturity above all else.
Q. Why is understanding your mate's past experiences, emotional intelligence, and desires so essential for nurturing successful relationships?
Because those elements shape how a person shows up in a relationship. Past experiences influence behavior, emotional intelligence determines how conflicts are managed, and knowing someone’s desires ensures you’re working toward the same vision. Without understanding those things, you risk constant misalignment.
Q. If you had to choose one—Fame or wealth, which would you choose and why?
If I had to choose, I’d choose wealth. I have no desire to chase fame at the expense of financial security. Fame without wealth doesn’t sustain you. Everything I’ve done has come from passion, not a desire to be famous. God has blessed me financially, but now I want to be recognized for the work. After 10 years in this industry, I still feel like the new kid on the block, and while recognition matters, building wealth and legacy is more important to me.
Q. What is next for you?
Next, I’m focused on Culture & Co., the new ensemble talk show I’m developing. It’s going to be a next-level, original production for In The Black. Beyond that, my hope is to eventually host a major talk show of my own while continuing to grow as both a creator and executive.
