THE EDITOR IN CHIEF
What is your definition of Alpha Female ?
An Alpha female is totally confidence in herself and knows her worth. She knows her strengths and is not afraid to admit she’s human and has weaknesses. She’s supportive of other women and is not afraid of seeing them shine. She can hold her own, next to any male without diminishing
her light or power.
Being a woman in the entertainment business, what other women have inspired you throughout your career?
I’ve always looked up to a number of women like: Diana Ross, a mother with 5 children that never compromised motherhood for her career. Phylicia Rashad for doing the same. Oprah has always been one that inspired generations by her drive and determination to not let her past stand in the way of her future. I also admire women like Maya Rudolph and Goldie Hawn who continue to use their comedic intelligence. It’s just as sexy and smart to be a funny girl.
When you hear “the future is female,” what comes to mind?
That statement makes me feel like we’ve made so many strides as women and that society has finally caught up to where women have always been. We are fearless, unapologetic and fierce.
What is missing when it comes to women’s empowerment?
I don’t know if we’re missing anything but I think we need to continue the conversation. We need to teach our young girls that there’s nothing
wrong with supporting each other and it should start from a young age.
Often times we get into cliques and end up missing out on support from one another.
If you could go back in time & meet a younger you, what
would you tell yourself?
I would tell my younger self not to worry about the little
things so much. It’s more important to enjoy the process and journey of life. I’d also suggest that she be patient with herself during that process.
How do you balance your career and family life?
I balance by making my family a priority. I try to not be overwhelmed with the fact that I have work to do. I used to feel so guilty when I had to leave but now, I consult with my family first and make sure that I plan things before so that we all get the necessary family time in. It’s important
to me to have quality time with them.
Is there anyone you never worked with that you would like to in future?
I’d love to collaborate with John Legend, but the late Luther Vandross is one of my greatest regrets. We had the opportunity but because of scheduling wasn’t able to make it happen. I’d also like to a female empowerment song with various artists.
What was the inspiration for iconic, hit single, “Nobody’s suppose to be here"?
I don’t know what the inspiration was because the writers told me it was originally written for Patti LaBelle. All I can tell you is that the first time I heard this song it spoke to me. That’s how I fell in love with my husband. I also knew that it was going to be a very powerful record because it
really resonated with my truth.
Tell us about your new single, “Easy Way” . Will we get a
new Deborah Cox album?
The new single “Easy Way” is about that moment in Love where are you don’t know what to do, you don’t know if you should take the easy way out by giving up or if you should stick it out and fight for it and stay together.
What can the world get ready to see from Deborah Cox
in 2020?
I have a film called Influence out on BET plus Feb 20th A new album and more movies in the works! I’m excited about 2020. My vision and goals are so clear!
